Garland TX
History
Founded in 1874, Garland Texas has a population of 226,876. Garland originated around the Peters colony area in about 1850, The city was named after U.S. Attorney General Augustus Hill Garland after the first post office was built between the two rival towns of Embree and Duck Creek. If you are wondering why a post office was built between two towns, it was for the reason that the two towns rivalries was so intense that the post office was built between the two as a way to end the stalemate between them.
Eventually the two towns of Embree and Duck Creek, that then were on either side of newly formed Garland decided to make up and combine into Garland and became incorporated in 1891. By 1904 the town of Garland boasted a grand total of 819 people.
During the years of The Great Depression Garland experienced an exodus as the population sought out other areas out of the city for their livelihood. As the years passed by, people started to move back into Garland in the late 1930’s. Along with the influx of people, Industry businesses began to flourish. Some of the more notable businesses included, The Craddock food company as well as the Byer-Rolnick factory that produced hats, It is now owned by Resistol. The large Dallas radio station KRLD built is tower in 1937 and to this day it is operational.
With the great war effort that occurred nationwide during World War 2, numerous aircraft factories operated in the area that produced the allied air power that served a crucial role in the Allied victory over the Axis Powers. After the war one of those factories was purchased by the food giant Kraft Foods. Steady growth in the Garland area boosted Garland’s population to 10,000 by 1950. Within a decade the population of Garland expanded. Fueled by the post war baby boom the population reached 38,500 by 1960. Expansion continued and by the 70’s the population number was 81,500 and by 1980, the population was 138,850.
Some noteworthy developments in Garland that occurred at the turn of the century include, the Hawaiian Falls waterpark. There had been a Wet’n Wild that closed in 1993. And Garland’s independent school district newly remodeled (2005) arena and conference center now known as the Culwell Center which had been the Special Events Center. Shortly afterward in October 2005, the Firewheel Town Center was built which is a main street type outdoor shopping center owned by Simon Property Group. The Town Center houses more than 100 businesses including the national movie theater group AMC Theater. Then in 2009 in a private/public collusion between the city of Garland, TX and Trammell Crow Company developed the old 5th and 6th street and North of Austin Street mega parking lot into a land mixed-use development aptly named 5th Street Crossing. Kitty corner to City Hall as well as the down city DART rail station. It includes 189 residential multi-family units, 11,000 foot squared mixed use retail shops and multiple residential work units.

A local business leader paid for the new electric generator plant run by Fairbanks-Morse for the town. Much later the Garland Power and Light the main city supplier of power for the city was formed and is still in operation today.
On the day of May 9th 1927 a destructive F4 tornado touched down in Garland killing 15 people, also included in the deaths was former mayor, S.E. Nicholson.
For 4 year between 1950 to 1954 both Dallas and Garland area was impacted by a severe and long drought leading to the use of water from Lake Lavon for municipal use in combination from well water use.
CNN and Money magazine listed Garland as 67th “Top 100 Places to Live.
In 2014 Garland was ranked the 6th for “Best City for Working Parents as well as the 7th best city for saving money and also the second best in Texas
2015 saw Garland listed number 17 overall and 5th best mid-sized city to buy a home for 1st time home buyers. And also the 8th best run city in America and number 8 in the nation to raise a family.
In 2017 it was listed as the second best city in Texas and number 17 for all around jobs by move.org. Smart asset listed the city as third best city for living the American Dream and in 2018 Garland will enjoy the number 5 spot for the highest employment growth in the country.
Garland’s climate is humid subtropical. The warmest month on average is July, and the high temperature record was set in the year 2000 at 111 fahrenheit. January is the coldest month of the year with a low record of -3 fahrenheit in 1989. Most of the rain happens in the month of May.
After World War 2 Kraft foods purchased the Continental Motors Plant and refurbished it for its needs. The pant is still in operation now. In 1940’s Garland shipped a lot of onions from its two railroad hubs.
Hat producer, Resistol Hats in a prominent employer in the city of Garland of quality top-notch hats, famously worn by many well known people throughout the world. Resistol is a cornerstone to the city’s industrial labor base. The company enjoys its name because their hat product of choice can resist all weather conditions as well they are resistant to hair oil and other male accouterments. They got their start in Garland and still build hats there today. They have expanded operations many times over the years and people still flock to work there because of their enduring reputation.
In the early 80’s the city enjoyed a very low poverty rate in comparison to the rest of the United States. In 1990 the city numbered 180,650 and 2,227 businesses. These numbers put in at the 2nd largest city in Dallas County and the 10th largest in the state. At this point in time Garland supports businesses in electronics, steel making, oilfield technology, alloy die molding, making headgear, dairy consumer goods and food stuffs.
Everyday the men and women of Garland mobilize throughout the city to make there area a better place. They could be going to work in an office high rise or operating a sprinkler repair company near Garland.
